Across the Universe was an 11-channel sound installation in the old ring kiln (from the 16th century) of the Kunsthalle Ziegelhütte Appenzell. There were 11 loudspeakers regularly distributed in the kiln, which contained ten different sounds. Two loudspeakers were located near the floor, in niches, and played the same sound. It was the transformation of the sun’s magnetic field into tones. The sun’s tones sounded out from the centre of the stove, where the fire had originally burned. The other 9 speakers were in the air vents and reproduced the sounds of the 9 planets, which were also converted by NASA. Superimposed on this was another sound that travelled from planet to planet. This trace contained distorted voices that reproduced a speech. It was the speech of Chief Seattle. The work was accompanied by a fanzine that summarised strands of association. Across the Universe was shown on the occasion of the exhibition “Zahl, Rhythmus, Wandlung – Emma Kunz und die Gegenwartskunst”.
